Day 2

This morning the kids were up at 5:30. I guess they still have not acclimated to the new time zone, but it worked out well, because we anted to take advantage of the clear and cooler morning weather. We drove to Quepos, a town about 45 minutes north of us, that is more populated and tourist oriented. We saw a school (see pictures, which seem to be in reverse order) and Amy and Sarah talked with some students. They were having a big birthday party for someone, but we never did figure out who. Then we drove through Manuel Antonio, a town that is full of resorts, bars, restaurants, and casinos. It caters to Americans, but it also is home of a huge National Park that we plan to spend a day in, maybe next week.

We found a great bakery called the Hot Rock (picture), run by American expats in Quepos and had a nice breakfast of sweet rolls. We also bought some bread for meals this week. Then we went to a supermarket called PALI and stocked up on groceries (no rice or beans, please) and staples to cook some meals with.

Quepos and Manuel Antonio are nice, but they have the feel of American resort towns like Hilton Head. We were happy to return to our little town of Uvita. Along the way we stopped at a popular surfing beach called Playa Hermosa (picture). The kids had a great time swimming in the incoming tide, and we watched students from a surf school try to master the 10 foot waves (with little success). We also found the outflow of a mountain waterfall where it runs to the sea. Sarah and Samuel were amazed at the cold clear water that carves a path through the beach sand

Today it did not rain at all. We returned home at 2pm, expecting the usual afternoon thunderstorm, but it never came. The kids swam in the pool for a few hours, and then I made a satisfying dinner of pasta and garbanzo bean soup from the groceries we bought, and good bakery bread.

There are still issues with the telephone, but the girls at the Uvita Center promise it will be straightened out tomorrow morning. We are going to a farmers’ market in town and plan to do a few local activities and try out a nicer restaurant for lunch. Check tomorrow’s post to see how it goes.
